CONSISTENCY is the aim for Ben Williams as he bids to end Bury's long search for a number one.

The Shakers used seven goalkeepers last season as a succession of injuries hit the camp.

Manager David Flitcroft has struggled to find a long-term solution since letting go Brian Jensen at the end of his first season in charge.

But he moved quickly in the summer to capture the signature of former Bradford stopper Williams.

The 33-year-old broke the Bantams' clean-sheet record for a season with 22 last term and he already has two in four games for the Shakers.

The former Manchester United trainee hopes there will be plenty more to come.

“Hopefully I’ll bring that consistency that is craved in football,” Williams said. “The consistency of a solid base to a team is what you build your foundations on and hopefully I can be part of that.

“Clean sheets are what we're all striving for.

"I got a lot of clean sheets last year and it put Bradford into the play-offs.

“I think the manager's touched on it before. Clean sheets will always get you a point and they are the base for you to go on and win games.”

Williams drew inspiration from the likes of Peter Schmeichel during his time at the Old Trafford academy.

Like Schmeichel, Williams is one of the more vocal players on the pitch and he hopes his organisational skills will help make Bury's backline watertight – even if it means he does not see the ball for the entire game.

“My organisation skills, that's what I like to bring to the table,” Williams added. “I grew up as a youngster watching players like Peter Schmeichel and David Seaman.

"They're big, vocal organisers at the back and if you're organising well and doing your job then you don't get to see much of the ball and it's going to be a quiet afternoon.

“The main job for me is organising those players in front of me so that I don't get to see the ball.

“I started at Man United when I was 17 and left at 21 to go and play football and I've been fortunate to have a good league career from that point. Long may it continue.”
