CODY Taylor's winning goal three minutes from time clinched the South Manchester Girls League title in dramatic fashion for the Bury Girls and Ladies FC Under-14s side.

The late winner, Taylor's second of the game, earned a 2-1 victory over long-time league leaders Alty Eagles in the final match of the season, helping the Shakers leapfrog them and win the title by a point.

They were eight points behind Alty, but with matches in hand they went on a late surge, taking 13 points from a possible 15 to cut the gap to two before their final-day head-to-head.

The title-decider was hugely competitive with Alty having more possession, but Bury show some determined defending and a great finish from Taylor put them 1-0 up at half time.

Alty continued to press, scoring an equaliser with 15 minutes to go.

Both teams then had chances to win it before flying winger Annabelle Barnett beat the Alty full-back and crossed to the far post where Taylor slid home the title-winning goal.

The squad received their medals at a league presentation at the AJ Bell Stadium, where captain and top scorer Beth Schofield picked up the Championship trophy, and hugely talented defender Annabel Sankey was awarded second place in the league's player of the season award.

Club organisers are now on the lookout for talented players currently in Year 9 to add to the winning formula.

"Most of the girls have been with the club since they were nine or 10," said coach John Woodman.

"But with the move up to u15s football next season, and an 11-a-side game, comes a need for more players."

Woodman added: "Bury are a great club that offers a happy home to more than 200 girls and ladies, who enjoy playing football from age six upwards.

"We are a progressive local club, run by numerous volunteer managers, coaches and parent helpers with 14 teams, but we are always on the lookout for new players."
