BURY gymnast Jack Chamberlain finished sixth overall at the Budapest Cup in Hungary in his first international competition with Great Britain’s junior squad.

One of four Team GB gymnasts selected to take part in the prestigious under-16s competition, the 15-year-old came home with a silver medal in the individual vault and a bronze for his performance on the high bar.

The year 10 pupil at Elton High School, who trains at Bury Gymnastics Club, was competing against gymnasts from 10 European countries.

“It was a fantastic experience,” said Jack.

“It is great to meet and compete against gymnasts from other countries and the Budapest Cup drew entries from some of the countries of eastern Europe which have such a strong history in the sport.”

The competition was spread over two days with an all-round competition involving all six gymnastics disciplines on day one. After Jack finished in the top 10, he joined gymnasts with the best scores on day one to compete on each individual piece of apparatus on day two.

Paul Hockwart, Jack’s coach at Bury Gymnastics Club, travelled to Hungary as part of the British coaching team and was impressed with his protege’s performance.

“This was a very tough competition and only the second time Jack has had to compete over two consecutive days,” he said.

“His performance on day one was very good and only a slip on his final event, the parallel bars, stopped him from achieving a place on the podium.

“He qualified for five out of six finals on day two and put in clean performances in all of them. Coming home with a couple of medals is a great reward for his hard work preparing for the competition.”
