BURY cycling twins Simon and Adam Yates have been set the target of securing a stage win after being picked to ride for Australian team Orica GreenEdge in this year’s Tour de France.
It will be Adam’s debut in the sport’s blue riband event, while Simon completed 15 days of last year’s Tour in his first season as a pro rider.
Orica GreenEdge sports director Matt White wants both brothers to finish this year’s event but believes the 22-year-olds, who are excellent climbers, have the ability to make an impact in the mountain stages.
“They have proven this year that they have the ability to be very competitive on a lot of varied terrains and against the best riders in the world.
“We are aiming to win a stage with them. If they can hunt out the right move then on any given day they have the ability to win.”
Adam and Simon, who went to The Derby High School and started cycling with Bury Clarion, are amongst 10 Brits picked to take part in this year’s Tour, including 2013 winner Chris Froome and 25-time stage winner Mark Cavendish.
