THEY may already be revelling in worldwide success, but the borough’s latest famous exports are set to receive another honour.

Bury Council is considering granting the freedom of the borough to film director Danny Boyle, rock band Elbow, and Paralympian Zoe Robinson.

The proposal is to be formally announced at tonight’s full council meeting by the Mayor of Bury, Councillor Peter Ashworth.

A special council meeting will then be fixed to approve the honours and present them to the freemen.

The freedom is the highest tribute that a borough can give and although it does not carry any legal rights, freemen are invited to take part in all important ceremonial events in the borough.

Councillor Bob Bibby, leader of the council, said: “Danny Boyle’s, Elbow’s and Zoe Robinson’s successes over the past 12 months have really put the borough of Bury on the map, both nationally and internationally.

“We are really proud of all of these individuals’ outstanding achievements in their respective professions and by granting them freedom of the borough we want to acknowledge their hard work, determination and commitment and this is the council’s way of congratulating them all on their recent successes.”

Award-winning film director Danny Boyle grew up in Radcliffe and retains strong links with the town, even mentioning it during his speech at the Oscars.

Rock band Elbow - made up of Guy Garvey, Mark Potter, Craig Potter, Richard Jupp and Pete Turner - formed at Stand College in Whitefield and have gone on to become one of the country’s top bands.

Former Coney Green High student Zoe Robinson, who lives in Lowercroft, became the pride of Bury when she won a gold medal with the boccia team at the Paralympic Games in Beijing.
