An "amazing" care home resident has celebrated her 100th birthday in style.

Sheila Ryder's landmark birthday fell on Monday and Elmsbank Short Stay Service in Whitefield, where she’s the only full-time resident, threw a huge party to celebrate the occasion.

Her friends, other residents and borough mayor, Cllr Sandra Walmsley, attended and enjoyed an afternoon tea and entertainment from the Divas In Denial, who sang tunes from the 50s and 60s.

Sheila has lived in Bury since she was a small child and was married to her husband Derek for 44 years up to his death a few years ago.

She served in the women’s air force and worked in a factory in Bury making felt hats.

Philip Baker, a friend of Sheila’s, said: “Sheila and Derek got married at Wood Street Methodist Church in Bury which is where we met them.

“They never had any children but lots of her friends are here who used to go to church with them.”

Cllr Walmsley wished Sheila a happy birthday and presented her with a card from King Charles.

In a speech, Cllr Walmsley said: “We are delighted to be here this afternoon to celebrate Sheila’s 100th birthday with you all.

“I did ask her what the secret was to such longevity, and she wouldn’t tell me so its top secret.

“It’s wonderful to see everyone here to celebrate with Sheila.

“On behalf of the metropolitan borough of Bury, I want to wish you many happy returns and on behalf of the King, I’m presenting you with the birthday card from him.”

Kim Taylor, activities coordinator at Elmhurst Short Stay, organised the party for Sheila.

She said: “This is the first 100th birthday we’ve done, the past three days have just been non-stop planning this party.

“It’s been really lovely and Sheila’s amazing, she’s been with us for a long time, she was at Spurr House, but they closed down.

“She’s the only full-time resident here as this is only a respite service.

“This party was a complete surprise to her, she knew she was having a bit of a do but didn’t know any of her friends were coming, but it’s been nice, and all the hard work has paid off.”

Kim gave her thanks to Zara Cakes, which donated a cake, Divas in Denial, who entertained for free and all the staff at Elmhurst who helped in planning the party.
