A DRIVER fled on foot after smashing a car into a bus stop in the centre of Bury.
The silver Vauxhall Vectra left the dual carriageway and crashed into the shelter in Jubilee Way at 12.15am, damaging some street furniture.
The male motorist ran off and abandoned the stricken vehicle and later a passer-by called the emergency services.
Crew manager Saul Hickey, of Bury Fire Station, said: "The police were in attendance and the driver was nowhere to be seen.
"The police had called us because there had been reports of smoke coming from the vehicle.
"When we got there we couldn't see smoke but it could have been the powder from when the air bag went off.
"The car had suffered some front end damage and we isolated the battery to make the car safe.
"It was on the carriageway travelling away from Peel Way but was facing in the direction of Peel Way. Whether it had spun, we don't know."
A spokeswoman for GMP said: "We were called at 12.15am to Peel Way, near the junction of Jubilee Way.
"A silver Vauxhall Vectra had hit a bus shelter and a fence and the driver, a man, is believed to have run off towards the town hall.
"He had a bald head, was of large build and was wearing a multi-coloured top."
The police said the car had no registered keeper and so it is unclear if it had been stolen.
