A VANDALISM attack which caused £1,500 worth of damage at a church's community gardens has stirred a Whitefield band into action.

After hearing about the incident in Little Hulton, leaders of Besses o'th' Barn Band decided to hold a fundraising concert in a bid to cover the cost of the damage.

Last month, volunteers at the Wharton & Cleggs Lane Church and Community Centre were left devastated when vandals attacked the community gardens and damaged a newly-completed polytunnel.

The brass band's musical director Simon Cowen contacted the church's organist Craig Mann, offering the services of the band to stage a concert on Saturday (Oct 17) at Walkden Methodist Church.

Simon explained: "Back in September I read about this unfortunate act of vandalism. It saddened me deeply, especially as this is such a wonderful cause by the local church and residents.

"I spoke with Craig immediately to discuss the opportunity of putting on a fundraising concert to make up the costs that the damage had caused. Craig was absolutely brilliant and he has been incredibly enthusiastic and proactive since. I speak for all of Besses o'th' Barn Band in saying that it is an absolute honour for us to help in some way for this most wonderful local cause."

Church minister, Reverend Philip Brooks said: "We are overwhelmed at this very touching act of generosity from Simon Cowen and the band, particularly as Besses are such a fabulous and world renowned group of musicians.

"It has made such a difference to our team of dedicated volunteers at the church’s community gardens. They feel inspired that the band would do this for them and for the local community. We are just so grateful."

Tickets for the concert, which starts at 7.30pm, are £6, including light refreshments. They can be purchased on the door or by contacting the church treasurer, Mr Keith Mann on 01942 896710, or by e-mailing: keith.mann.astley@talktalk.net
